Crab Tikki

This is a tasty spin on traditional Aloo Tikki. Aloo Tikki is a classic Indian snack that is a potato patty that’s crisped up and bursting with delicious spice or what we Indians call “chatpatta, and what chef Gaggan Anand calls Indian umami. Spicy, Sweet, Salty, and Sour.

For this dish, I use a semi-traditional Aloo Tikki recipe, but we are going to obviously add crab. If you do not have fresh Dungeness crab or do not want to spend the time breaking down a crab, you can usually buy lump crab meat at your local grocery store.

Ingredients

For the Crab Tikki

  • 12 oz Dungeness Crab meat

  • 2 shallots

  • 2 chillies (your choice on type depending on your spice tolerance)

  • 1 tbsp curry powder

  • 1 tbsp salt

  • 1 tbsp turmeric

  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste

  • 4 small potatoes (boiled)

  • Aloo Bhujia

For the sauce

  • 1/2 cup Maggi Chili Sauce (you can find this at a local Indian store)

  • 1 cup plain yogurt

  • 1 lime

  • 1 tbsp tamarind paste

Lets Cook!

Sauce

  1. Combine tamarind, yogurt, lime, and Maggi sauce in a bowl and mix thoroughly.

  2. Optional: place in a squeeze bottle for easy use.

Crab Tikki

  1. Combine crab, boiled potatoes, shallots, seasonings, and spices thoroughly. Make sure everything is distributed evenly in the mixture.

  2. Form half-inch thick patties and crust the outside with Aloo Bhujia.

  3. Add enough oil to coat the bottom of a pan and set heat to high.

  4. Sear each side of the tikkis for 2-3 minutes, till they are crispy on the outside.

  5. Once done, plate and top with sauce. Enjoy!
